The Office of State Lands and Investments leases acreage for the discovery and collection of fossils. There are two kinds of fossil permits, "Exclusive Commercial" and "Non-Exclusive Scientific". Exclusive Commercial Fossil Removal Permits are awarded to individuals who intended to collect fossils for resale. Non-Exclusive Scientific Fossil Removal Permits are awarded to qualified individuals who intend to collect specimens for the purpose of scientific display, research, or education. Fossils collected under a Non-Exclusive Scientific permit are not intended for resale.
Below is a summary of information regarding the leasing procedures and maintenance of both Exclusive Commercial and Non-Exclusive Scientific Fossil Removal permits. For specific details regarding fossil removal permits, please refer to Rules and Regulations of the SBLC Chapter 11.
