State of Wyoming Oil and Gas Lease Auction Information

The Wyoming Office of State Lands and Investments (OSLI) held the final oil and gas lease auction for 2018 on November 14, 2018 on behalf of the Wyoming Board of Land Commissioners – which is made up of the five statewide elected officials. The auction was open for one week and attracted ninety-one bidders. OSLI offered 239 parcels of State Trust Land for lease covering 88,849 acres across fifteen counties. The auction resulted in 188 of the 239 parcels receiving successful bids to lease 69,226.06 acres. The auction grossed $15,520,289.92 for the benefit of the State’s trust beneficiaries.


Funds received from this auction will be deposited for the benefit of twelve of the State’s trust beneficiaries. Of the total revenue, $12,346,713.70 will be deposited for the benefit of the State’s common school (K-12) fund.


Revenue generated by the auction will be distributed to support public education, the farm loan program, state penitentiaries, and other State funded programs. All leases resulting from winning bids will be issued on the lease form currently in effect as approved by the Wyoming Board of Land Commissioners as Lessor: for a primary term of five years, rental of $1.00 per acre, and a royalty rate of either 16 2/3% or 12 1/2% of the production as indicated on the parcel listing. Bidding will be on an online basis only.
